Nicholas Isbell

Hometown: Austin, TX

Class Speciality: 12-Week Spine and Orthopaedic Reconstruction & Trauma

Company Placement: Stryker

Tell me a little about your background.

I finished my academic career at the University of Mississippi where I also worked as an Emergency Room Tech. Throughout this position, I was given many opportunities to shadow surgeons throughout their Operating Rooms.

Why were you interested in pursuing medical sales as a career?

Throughout my academic and work history, I knew that I wanted to be in the medical industry, but I also wanted to be on the business side of the industry as well; however, I wanted to moreover help patient's quality of life and help improve surgeon productivity. Personally, I believe that the medical sales industry is the happy medium between the two aspects and allows me to deliver this to the community and make a difference in the world.

How did you learn about Medical Sales College?

I saw postings on LinkedIn about the internship and became interested in the college itself.

What ultimately made you decide to attend?

I knew that this industry was hard to break into and that I needed help with developing professionally. Ultimately, knowing the resources and knowledge that MSC would give me made it an easy decision.

Why should someone attend Medical Sales College?

The reason why someone should attend Medical Sales College is if someone wants to break into the medical device industry, and not only break into the industry but to make a lasting impact on companies and surgeons.

How long did you try to get into the industry before attending MSC? What was that experience like?

Over a year.

Please briefly explain your job interview process with your hiring company.

The application process for Austin, TX MAKO: - I applied for a MAKO position in Austin and was contacted by the recruiter and she informed me that the position was actually being offered that evening, but she said that I had a strong resume and that I would be a good fit with Stryker, she then got me into contact with the NW Recruiter for the position in Seattle. The process consisted of multiple interviews including: 1.) NW Recruiter 2.) An interview with two Hiring managers (Virtual Meetings via Microsoft Teams) 3.) The Gallup Assessment Interview 4.) An interview with one of the hiring managers from the 2nd interview(Virtual Meeting via Microsoft Teams), 5.) An interview with the NW manager 6.) My direct hiring manager called with offer 7.) Background check/drug screen and HR process for onboarding

What do you know now that you wish you had known before entering the industry/attending Medical Sales College?

I wish I knew about Medical Sales College earlier then when I did.

What was the most valuable thing you learned at Medical Sales College/What piece of training do you use the most in your day-to-day activities?

The most valuable thing I learned at MSC was the different surgical techniques. Throughout the interview process with Stryker, each interview with the recruiter, representatives, and manager were all very relaxed and seemed like a good fit. However, my last interview with the senior manager over the NW asked me specifics about the THA, TKA, and TSA procedure and then asked me to talk about how MAKO helped improve all of these approaches.
