Tell me a little about your background.

Dallas native, graduated from Texas A&M University in 2007. I have 6 years in commercial finance and mortgage sales.

Why were you interested in pursuing medical sales as a career?

Medical sales gives a person the ability to make a very good living while helping to improve the lives of others. It?s ever changing and evolving and requires a skill set unlike any other sales environment I?ve been a part of. The challenge gives it an elite niche feel that only a select few find themselves building a career in.

How did you learn about Medical Sales College?

I learned of MSC from a friend who had attended in 2012.

What ultimately made you decide to attend?

I took a long hard look at my career and the short and long term path I was on and decided that if I truly wanted to get my foot in the medical sales door, I had to do something drastic and take a calculated risk to propel myself into the career I really wanted for myself.

Please describe your training experience at Medical Sales College.

Within just a couple days our class became a very tight knit group willing to help and encourage each other. I was really amazed at how hands on and eager my instructor was, any intimidations or fears were completely wiped away after the first week. It was very intense with a lot of long nights and early mornings, but honestly it was a lot of fun. I realized how passionate I was about this program and becoming a Spine Rep.

What is the most valuable piece of information that you learned while attending MSC which ultimately helped you land your position?

The business plan I built for Accel Spine in accordance to instructions I learned at the school absolutely blew them away. He said he could tell I was already months ahead in my clinical knowledge than some of the reps he hired just months ago.

Why should someone attend Medical Sales College?

The only reason someone should attend the Medical Sales College is if they are 110% ready to change their life. Period. This is not a summer or winter mini-mester in college. Medical Sales College is a blueprint for how to become a successful and respected Medical sales representative. It?s something to be very proud of and allows you to see this industry through a much clearer lens than the average medical sales rep.

How long did you try to get into the industry before attending MSC? What was that experience like?

I applied to various entry level medical sales jobs, joined and paid for online medical sales recruiting sites, and knocked on doors via LinkedIn and any other form or networking I could find for 3+ years. I landed a phone interview after constant persistence with one of the top 5 device companies only to be told I lacked clinical, OR, and face to face surgeon sales/interaction. 2 months later I applied to Medical Sales College and was accepted into the spine program.

Did you have any fears about attending the School? What were they?

The only fear I had was whether I would be able to completely immerse myself into the curriculum, to focus and absorb everything I was being taught throughout the program. I of course worried about landing a job upon graduation, but those fears quickly vanished when I realized how marketable I would be in 6 short weeks.

Explain what your interview process was like.

I had several interviews with Accel Spine. They asked me how I liked attending the MSC, why I wanted to be a rep and what set me apart from the other reps sending in resumes on a weekly basis. The second interview was with a few more C level execs and another sales associate, I was offered the position before I left the building. Above all else they were blown away with my confidence and my knowledge of the spinal anatomy, my eagerness to work with surgeons and become an integral part of the OR.

What is your current job like?

I shadow our senior spine sales rep a few times a week. The surgeon we?re covering is a young first year spine surgeon who?s eager to teach and is impressed by a rep who is engaged and invests in his OR. It?s incredibly rewarding to be able to use what I?ve learned at the MSC in an actual OR.

What do you know now that you wish you had known before entering the industry/attending Medical Sales College?

I like most, probably came into MSC thinking I would be sitting through hour after hour of daily lectures expecting to ace a pop quiz the next morning. I was pleasantly surprised to find MSC so hands on and interactive. It is extremely intense at times however MSC instructors, and staff are there to see the students succeed. I have to remind myself that even though I am now able to call myself a medical device rep, I have to maintain an attitude of a student willing to continue to learn and relearn as much as possible. Success is on your shoulders, but the resources at MSC are invaluable to that success.

What was the most valuable thing you learned at Medical Sales College/What piece of training do you use the most in your day-to-day activities?

The Medical Sales College was a nice refresher of daily time management. Regardless of the specifics of the homework or essays I had to come home from school and organize my evening. I find myself doing the exact same thing now that I?m a rep, the day isn?t over at 5 or when you step in the door after fighting rush hour. This ?job? is a lifestyle and MSC taught me how to maintain a healthy lifestyle which is critical to becoming a successful rep.
