Tell me a little about your background.

I am from Edmond, Oklahoma where I was born and raised. I went to Oklahoma State University to major in Biology, and minor in Entrepreneurship. I have had an extensive background in customer service oriented roles, and upon graduation I was finding in difficult to break into medical device sales. I spent about six months as an independent insurance agent where I learned the value of following up and how to build trust and relationships quickly. From there I worked as a Placement service coordinator with MSC in the most rewarding role to date. I completed my internship, went through the course, and the rest is history.

Why were you interested in pursuing medical sales as a career?

Since I was little I?ve known I wanted to work in the medical industry at some capacity. My mom was a manager at an urgent care facility, so I was able to witness to an extent physicians helping patients get back to their everyday lives. It wasn?t until college that I discovered medical device sales. I started speaking with family friends and reps in the business, and knowing that I had the interpersonal skills, in addition to the technical background of biology, it was a perfect career for me.

How did you learn about Medical Sales College?

I had a connection that had previously taken the course in Sarasota, and I started to see advertisement for an internship opportunity. Although working as an insurance agent had its own benefits, I knew that my future was in medical devices, so I began to do research and decided to go for the internship opportunity. I was fortunate to earn that opportunity only a few shorts months later.

What ultimately made you decide to attend?

Knowing that this is 120% the career for myself, I wanted to eliminate any doubt an employer may have of myself as a candidate. I was fortunate to earn the internship opportunity with MSC only furthering my commitment, and had I not been awarded that opportunity, I would have likely taken the course to better myself as a candidate.

Please describe your training experience at Medical Sales College.

The training experience was excellent. By far and away have some of the best professionals to teach the curriculum. Rick Prentiss has been much of a mentor to myself over the course of this past year. He is completely knowledgeable about the inner and outer workings of how to be successful in this industry, and enjoys sharing his experiences through stories. He is an inspiration to look up to as my career begins. Malcolm, and Theresa were both equally as excellent. Everyone has their own teaching styles, and as a student and future rep, you must be able to adapt quickly to make sure you remain ahead of the curve. Malcolm is not the coach you may want to have, due to his desire to push every individual to his or her limits and challenge them, but Malcolm is the coach you appreciate more than anything down the road. He has helped me grow quite a bit. And Theresa, she is just the best, and always willing to help at any capacity.

Why should someone attend Medical Sales College?

I believe that you should attend MSC if you truly know that you are serious about a career in this industry. I have seen candidates of all different personalities, and there is no set personality that succeeds more than another, however, what I have seen is that the students that are serious about a career, tend to learn more, invest more, and provide a lot of value to the companies upon graduation. MSC has changed my life forever, and for those struggling to get into the industry, I believe that with the right mindset it will change your life as well.

How long did you try to get into the industry before attending MSC? What was that experience like?

Only about 6 months. I was fresh out of college

Please briefly explain your job interview process with your hiring company.

It was pretty slow out of the gate, as we graduated in November around the start of the holidays, but come January quickly progressed. I had several interviews prior to the holidays with Zimmer Spine, Smith & Nephew, and a few other companies. Come January I was interviewing with all of the major players in the industry (DePuy, Stryker, Smith & Nephew, Arthrex, Zimmer Biomet, etc.). I received 3 offers over the course of 2 months out of class, one with Marvel Group in Dallas, one with Arthrex in Houston, and one with Smith & Nephew in Fort Worth. I am more than appreciative of each and every company that gave me the opportunity to interview for their company, but I knew that Smith & Nephew would provide me with opportunity to grow into my own.

What do you know now that you wish you had known before entering the industry/attending Medical Sales College?

There is nothing that I wish I would have known prior to attending MSC. With the surge of robotics from companies like, Stryker, DePuy, Smith & Nephew, and Intuitive, the only thing I would like to know is more about them, and how this will affect the market and the surgeons themselves.

What was the most valuable thing you learned at Medical Sales College/What piece of training do you use the most in your day-to-day activities?

I learned that people are people, whether you are a surgeon, a celebrity, a professional athlete, etc. Each one of us are human, and when you realize that, it makes you comfortable with speaking to anyone about anything. This is a relationship focused industry and it?s important to value the connections you make.
